âą Six CD box set containing the complete recordings released between 1981 and 1986 by Edward Ballâs indie mod band The Times including their albums âGo! With The Timesâ (recorded 1980 but released in 1985), âPop Goes Art!â (1982), âThis Is Londonâ (1983), âHello Europeâ (1984), âUp Against Itâ (1986) and âEnjoyâ (1986).
âą Also includes The Timesâ rare 1981 debut single âRed With Purple Flashesâ / âBiff! Bang! Pow!â which has sold for over ÂŁ300 on Discogs and was named as one of the top five mod revival singles in MOJO magazine.
âą Bonus tracks include The Timesâ legendary take on the âTheme From Dangermanâ, a cover of
David Bowieâs âLondon Boysâ, tracks from the 12â EPs âI Helped Patrick McGoohan Escapeâ (1983), âBlue Periodâ (1985), âBoys About Townâ (1986) and âTimes TVâ (1986) and an alternative version of perhaps their most famous song âI Helped Patrick McGoohan Escapeâ (inspired by cult TV series The Prisoner) taken from the âA Splash Of Colourâ compilation that celebrated the early 1980s psychedelic revival.
Edward Ball was a member of cult band The Television Personalities alongside his school friend Dan Treacy before leaving to concentrate on The Times. Treacy plays guitar on the âPop Goes Art!â album which was originally released on Dan and Edâs Whaam! Records before being reissued on Edwardâs Artpop! label.
The Whaam! label set up by Edward Ball with the Television Personalitiesâ Dan Treacy and Ballâs own Artpop! Label were a direct inspiration for Alan McGee to set up Creation Records who signed Edward Ball in 1988. McGee was a fan of The Times and the âPop Goes Art!â and âThis Is Londonâ albums and they inspired his own band Biff Bang Pow! and Creation Records.
The 1986 album âUp Against Itâ is the soundtrack to Joe Ortonâs rejected screenplay for The Beatles that was staged by Edward Ball and Mood Sixâs Tony Conway at a West London theatre.
Edward Ball has approved the box set and has contributed notes alongside MOJO and Record Collector writer Lois Wilson.
The albums âThis Is Londonâ, âHello Europeâ and âEnjoyâ make up the âFrank Summitâ trilogy, an ambitious work with the scope of âTommyâ or âQuadropheniaâ that foretells Brexit and the rise of right wing leaders such as Donald Trump.
