Looking In The Shadows
The Raincoats have offered creative and spiritual inspiration for several generations of artists such as John Lydon, Kim Gordon, Kurt Cobain, Carrie Brownstein, Bikini Kill, Angel Olsen... In 1979, The Raincoats helped shape the timeless notion that punk is what you make it to be - an act of raw expression, not any one sound. Their anarchy was poetic.
The groupâs debut album âThe Raincoatsâ, which Kurt Cobain called âwonderfully classic scriptureâ, was released by Rough Trade Records at its radical beginnings. In 1992, Kurtâs meeting with Ana da Silva sparked a much-documented relationship with The Raincoats, bringing them back together to play live on Nirvanaâs final tour that never was, and inspiring Ana da Silva and Gina Birch to write âLooking in the shadowsâ, their final album, released in 1996 on Rough Trade Records and DGC. Original CD release from Rough Trade Records in 1996. Recorded at Trident II in August 1995. Produced and mixed by Ed Buller. Backing vocals on âLove a loserâ by Buzzcocksâ Pete Shelley. Video of âDonât Be Meanâ directed by Gina Birch.
âIt was The Raincoats I related to most. They seemed like ordinary people playing extraordinary music. Music that was natural that made room for cohesion of personalities. They had enough confidence to be vulnerable and to be themselves without having to take on the mantle of male rock/punk rock aggressionâŠor the typical female as sex symbol avec irony or sensationalismâ. Kim GordonâŠ.
