Laughter (2025 Reissue)
Demon Records are delighted to welcome back the one of the richest and most diverse catalogues in the British rock cannon from the iconic, much- missed Ian Dury.
Kicking off what promises to be an exciting and comprehensive reappraisal of the artistâs repertoire come the first three of Ianâs gold-plated studio albums, available again on vinyl â the debut âNew Boots And Panties!!â (1977), 1979âs classic âDo It Yourselfâ and âLaughterâ (1980).
After two platinum â selling solo albums on the bounce, Ian Dury found himself at a creative crossroads with âLaughterâ. His songwriting partner Chas Jankel had exited The Blockheads afer a gruelling promotional tour and was replaced with Dr. Feelgood legend Wilko Johnson on guitar duties. Meanwhile Blockheads keyboard player Mick Gallagher returned to the band following a US tour with The Clash.
The ironically titled âLaughterâ (âI called it âLaughterâ to cheer myself upâ) saw Dury genius for lyrics turn towards his personal and historical demons on an angry and harrowing set of songs, such as âDelusions Of Grandeurâ, âManic Depression (Jimi)â and âFucking Adaâ, while âHey, Hey, Take Me Awayâ recalled the time heâd attended a special school stricken with polio. âLaughterâ also carried one of the all-time classic singles âSuepermanâs Big Sisterâ.
