Altameda will release their first track of the new year, the brilliant, driving âNightmare Townâ on 19th January. The Canadian duo have also announced their new album âBorn Losersâ will be released on 15th April via Modern Sky.
"The concept for the song âNightmare Townâ was influenced largely by the film Badlands, and the true story that the film is loosely based on. Though the violence of those stories have no place in âNightmare Town,â I found the desperation of the characters compelling. I will always love my hometown, however, the desire to change your geographical placement for the sake of adventure and spiritual growth is something that Iâm sure most people can relate to at some point in their lives. I imagined a young couple daydreaming about stealing a car and making a break for it to some undetermined destination. Stopping at nothing to achieve freedom from their circumstances." - Altameda
This feeling is conveyed sonically with a drum beat, acoustic guitars, and an energetic, desperate vocal delivery mixed with biting electric guitars, piano & organ. The lyrics depict the characterâs home-town with precise detail focusing on the mundanity of suburban life, crystallizing into a simple and anthemic chorus.
The upcoming âBorn Losersâ is Altamedaâs strongest album to date. Recorded in Toronto, ON by Thomas DâArcy (Neko Case, The Sheepdogs) and mixed in Portland, OR by Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, Whitney, REM) the newest offering shows immense growth, both musically and personally. Grappling with family tragedy, love lost, and the countless miles in between. The record is both lyrically nuanced and compositionally lush. It is clear that the band have a bright future ahead. It features the previous tracks âDead Manâs Suitâ and âWheel Of Loveâ.
Altameda have been tipped extensively to this point, with the likes of Rolling Stone and Glide praising the band. Theyâve also played SXSW and The Great Escape. Now theyâve partnered with Modern Sky UK, one of the most exciting new labels around for their new album âBorn Losersâ, set for release in Spring 2022.
It will be the follow-up to 2019âs Hasnât Changed You. Full and resounding, cutting and dynamic, Altamedaâs sophomore record is full of all that makes life a beautiful mess. Brought along by warm bass lines, bluesy rhythms and the sweet whir of the wurlitzer, vocalist Troy Snaterseâs lyrics burn with nostalgia and present desire, made vivid by his talk-like cadences and emotional peaks. It will lift you out of your seatâthen all at once send you spiralling down to the kitchen floor.
